HOLY SYNOD OF THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH APPROVES THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ROMANIAN ORTHODOX METROPOLIA OF THE AMERICAS
BUCURESTI, ROMANIA (28 October 2016). The Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church approved the creation of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolia of the Americas at its working session on 28 October 2016. This action by the Holy Synod was a ratification of the decisions taken by the Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the Americas held from 30 June through 2 July 2016 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
Among the decisions taken by the Holy Synod, under the presidency of His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel, were:
· The establishment of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada; · The establishment of the Romanian Orthodox Metropolia of the Americas, composed of two dioceses: The Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese of the United States of America, and the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada; · The election of His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian as Diocesan Bishop of the Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada; · The elevation to the dignity of Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan of the Americas, His Eminence Archbishop Nicolae. The ceremony of elevation to the rank of Metropolitan to take place on 30 October 2016 at the Patriarchal Cathedral following the Divine Liturgy and officiated by Patriarch Daniel, in the presence of the members of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church.
Following the official votes of the Holy Synod, His Beatitude expressed his joy and best wishes for the two Hierarchs. He said: “We wish health, joy, and abundant assistance from God for His Grace, the newly elected Romanian Orthodox Bishop of Canada, Ioan Casian; and also, for His Eminence, the new Romanian Orthodox Metropolitan of the Americas, Archbishop Nicolae. We know he will do everything needed for the enthronement of the new Bishop, at an appropriate time, given the time needed to properly organize the new Diocese.”
His Beatitude Patriarch Daniel summarized by stating that the ceremony of elevation to the rank of Metropolitan will take place on 30 October 2016 at the Patriarchal Cathedral following the Divine Liturgy. The Enthronement itself will take place in Chicago, in the presence of a delegation from the Romanian Orthodox Patriarchate, at an appropriate date to be determined.
Following the well-wishes of His Beatitude, His Eminence Metropolitan-elect Nicolae thanked the Hierarchs and assured them that the mission of our Church in the Americas will continue. He said: “I thank you for the understanding you have showed toward our mission on the North American and South American continents. Today we have taken another step forward toward its better organization. We thank our Good Lord who has illumined all of us and has encouraged us along the way.”
His Grace, Bishop Ioan Casian, newly elected of the newly established Romanian Orthodox Diocese of Canada, said that this thirty-two year desire for a Canadian Diocese has now been fulfilled. “I greatly rejoice at this moment. I wish to express my thanks to the members of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church who received me well over ten years ago, and entrusted me with this mission, with the blessings of His Eminence Archbishop Nicolae, to pastor the Romanians living across the ocean. This desire of the Romanians to have a Canadian Diocese becomes a reality after thirty-two years. It will permit us to have a strong pastoral presence. It will also allow the Romanian Orthodox community to be represented in the same way as the other Orthodox jurisdictions.”
Following these decisions taken by the Holy Synod, affirming the decisions of the 80thCongress of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese in the Americas, planning will begin for the enthronement of the new Metropolitan and the Bishop of Canada. At its upcoming meeting the Archdiocesan Council will: review the steps taken to form the Canadian Diocese, both legally and administratively; review any legal and administrative issues needed for the Archdiocese to accommodate to the new territorial delimitations; see to the convening of the Congresses of both the Archdiocese of the USA and the new Canadian Diocese; and set the dates for the enthronements of His Eminence Metropolitan Nicolae and His Grace Bishop Ioan Casian.
